Taunton – Somerset is the largest town in its shire. It is a town on the south western corner of England. This area is very influential in its region. It is the home to the Royal Marines.

It started its influential history when the Saxons founded it before the first millennium. Quickly viewed as a strong hold, a castle was built, as was a mint. The castle, sadly, is no longer there for viewing as it was torn town by the same people who built it when it was threatened to be taken by rebels.

It was a large religious center for a while, being in the ownership of Bishops. During the War of the Roses, competing factions recognized its value. The town therefore changed hands several times and was an important battle site. It has remained an important battle site even up until World War II.

Taunton has recently undergone many changes. A few years ago the local government recognized its flagging economy and therefore decided to put use to much of the undeveloped land nearby. The area is going to be used to build stores and businesses in addition to good quality, low price apartments. Since these projects started, unemployment also fell by almost one percent, a testament to its success.

One of the main industries in the area is the production of cider. Taunton is famous for its cider. There are factories which produce optics equipment. Also, due to the fact that the Royal Marines have a home here, there is a lot of government employment to be had. Sea studies and military information makes up a decent percentage of the economy.

The town also has philanthropic aims–and has had them for centuries. It is one of the first sites of a women’s shelter which was created in the sixteen hundreds. This building still serves the same purpose today. One charitable area that, thankfully, does not need to be run any more was a leper colony.

Taunton can be just one great experience after another. The churches have great masses for the religious and are worth a look for tourists in general. Historians delight in them. For sports fans, there is plenty of cricket to watch, as that is the main sport here. You can also find plenty of skateboarding and mountain biking to be done.
